This month's masthead photo is HMS Gorleston, a Banff-class escort sloop. She was one of ten U.S. Coast Guard Lake-class cutters--the entire class--transferred to the Royal Navy in 1941 under the provisions of Lend-Lease. The ships were better sea-boats than the more well-known 4-stack destroyers transferred under Lend-Lease, and were appreciated as such by their crews (who also appreciated the galleys fully-stocked with U.S. foodstuffs at the time of transfer). All ten ships served initially in escorting convoys between England and Sierra Leone, during which service one--HMS Culver, ex-USCGC Mendota--was torpedoed and sunk by U-105. In late 1942 the nine surviving ships were assigned to Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Two more of the class were lost there in the failed attack on Oran (Operation Reservist). After this the remaining seven sloops escorted Mediterranean convoys until being assigned to the Kilindini Escort Force in the Indian Ocean in late 1943/early 1944, providing convoy escort in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Six were returned to the U.S. at the end of the war while one, worn out and disabled, was scrapped overseas.
After a loooooooong gestation period, this month should finally see the release of our 1/350 scale kits of these ships. Kit K3563 will provide HMS Gorleston in particular, with the various RN details common to the refitted ships. With a little study and effort, it should be possible to build any of the RN sloops. Kit K3584 will build the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Itasca or Tahoe. Again, with some research, modellers should be able to build any of the class in original fit. Pre-order now.
