WEM K 724 1/700 Askold 1903
5-Stack Pre-Dreadnought Protected Cruiser
Updated 21st Feb. 99 Jim Baumann's awesome Askold builds have been added to this feature

Above: Before the Russo-Japanese War 1903, with white hull, buff funnels
The Askold was launched in 1900, being probably the fastest Russian cruiser of the time. She was quite unique in appearance, having 5 tall funnels. She proved her worth in the Russo-Japanese war.
In WWI she served in the Mediterranean and White Sea, where she was later captured by the British and commissioned in August 1918 as Glory IV. She was sent back to Russia and broken up in 1921. The money raised from her was used to build new Russian railroads.

The above Etched Brass fret, WEM PE 730 is
ALSO being made available separately at 10.17 pounds if anyone requires it... numerous details to suit those Kombrig kits! The selection of photos below shows Jim Baumann's gorgeous Askold builds... the first model as the kit portrays her in 1903, he has added 2 effective ingredients. 1. Gold Medal Models 1/700 Crew Figures and 2. Jim has fully rigged the model using stretched sprue from end to end, incorporating the photoetched parts as necessary. Boats are out on booms.. note even the pinnace is fully crewed, men at the ready with boat hooks. Note the photoetched torpedo net shelves, and please remember that the whole model is a little over 8 inches long!
Also notice how gold paint has highlighted the crest details, and the fact that JB chose to model the gun embrasures in the closed, as opposed to open, positions (logically!)
Below, Jim has built another Askold in her wartime colours.. this model just took joint "Best of Show", along with ALL of his ship model entries at the 1999 Fleet Air Arm model show. Notice that in this model, her gun embrasures are open. Check out that 6 inch planking!
