HISTORY

The USS Knox was laid down by Todd Shipbuilding, Seattle on 5th October 1965 and launched on 19th November 1966.

Commissioning for the first time in April 1969, Knox started life as a Destroyer Escort (DE) but was re- classified as a Frigate (FF) in 1975, after the abandonment of several projects that were to be fitted. One of these projects was the fixed 'billboard' ESM antenna which influenced the design of the unusually large "Mack".

Another abandoned project was the DASH anti submarine drone which was replaced by the Seasprite LAMPS Helicopter and stowed in the extending hangar, aft.

Further modifications involved the fitting of raised bulwarks on the fo'c's'le and spray strakes to the sides of the hull to reduce the amount of wetting forward.

Knox spent most of its career serving the Pacific fleets and was finally decommissioned in 1992, although it has been held at Bremerton for possible preservation as a museum exhibit.

THE KIT

This latest kit from WHITE ENSIGN MODELS follows in the footsteps of our first successful release of a modern U.S. Navy subject, the USS BENJAMIN STODDERT, a CF ADAMS Class Guided Missile Destroyer.

Peter Hall  designed and built the master patterns and computer-designed the etched brass details for the kit, which also includes white metal and resin detail parts.

The photoetched brass is relief etched on 5 thou brass. John Sheridan designed the decals, which we print on our ALPS printer.  The kit comes with 8 pages of fully detailed instructions including, as usual, a full colour plan and profile and painting notes.
